The development of the Central African Republic (CAR) throughout the entire period of independence (since August 13, 1960) was characterized by instability and crisis. The change of power in the country almost always took place by force. In 1966, the first president of the CAR, D. Dacko, was overthrown by J.-B. Bokassa, in 1979 D. Dacko in his turn removed J.-B. Bokassa, in 1981 D. Dacko was again overthrown by General A. Kolingba, who remained in power until the presidential elections in 1993, in which A.-F. Patassé won (re-elected for a second presidential term in 1999).
