65th anniversary of the Institute for African Studies of the
Russian Academy of Sciences
(Moscow, Russia, 21–23 May 2024)

Third Announcement and Call for Abstracts

Dear Colleagues,

on May 21–23, 2024, the Research Council for the Problems of African Countries and the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences are to hold in Moscow the 16th African Studies Conference “The New World Order: from the legacy of colonialism to sovereignty and development”. The Conference is timed to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the 65th anniversary of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Conference will be held in person only, with no online options. The working languages are Russian and English. The list of priority topics of the Conference is provided below.

You are kindly asked to submit your application to the Organizing Committee to iafr-ras300@inafr.ru. The deadline is November 30, 2023.

The application is to include as follows: the abstract (within 300 words in English or both English and Russian), the author(s)’ full name(s), institutional affiliation(s), full mail and e-mail addresses, telephone number.

The authors of the applications will be notified of their acceptance or rejection by the Organizing Committee no later than December 15, 2023 by e-mail. In case the application is accepted and you need Russian entry visas, the Organizing Committee will send you in the beginning of the year 2024 the list of documents necessary to support the visa application process at a Russian Consulate or Embassy.

There is no registration fee, but please note that the Organizing Committee does not have the capacity to provide financial support to the participants of the Conference. The Organizing Committee can advise on booking accommodation (inter.inafr@mail.ru), but self-booking is required. Please note that early hotel reservation in strongly recommended. The Organizing Committee would appreciate your familiarizing the members of your research/teaching unit, as well as all interested colleagues, with the present Announcement.

3. The growing role of Africa in the system of international relations: a view from Africa and Russia
4. Regional integration in Africa: challenges and achievements
5. Problems of food security in Africa
6. Problems of political stability in Africa: the government, the army and the opposition
7. Technological sovereignty as the basis of Africa's economic security
8. Information security of African countries
9. Combating terrorist threats and conflicts in Africa
10. The place of women in modern African society
11. The formation of nations in Africa: historical and cultural-anthropological aspects
12. Orthodox Christianity in Africa: modern challenges and prospects of development
13. Cultural and Religious transformation in Africa
14. Colonialism, neocolonialism, and “new” colonialism: African and global aspects
15. Postcolonial theories and African realities
16. African revival in global and regional dimensions: conditions, opportunities, prospects
17. Description and documentation of African languages: typological, corpus and sociolinguistic approaches

Abstracts of reports that do not fit into any of the above priority topics of the conference, which do not correspond to its general theme, will also be considered by the Organizing Committee.
