The monograph, based on a large body of material, examines colonial postcards as an important genre of visual sources. As well as items from other genres of visual sources, i.e. colonial photography and painting, references to which are provided for comparison and completeness, postcards visualize many aspects of life in colonial German East Africa — its nature, flora and fauna, the life of its local population, and the German colonizers and colonists themselves. A particularly large volume of postcards deals with the European part of the segregated colonial city and new types of buildings introduced by the Germans. At the same time, the postcards construct the entire system of colonial social hierarchies confirmed by written sources, through their deliberate choice of objects of depiction, plot, compositional solutions, arrangement of characters, and motifs recurring from image to image. The work is intended for historians of colonialism, specialists in colonial photography, and a wide range of readers interested in the visual representation of historical and social phenomena.
