Meeting of a delegation of Libyan scientists with the staff of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences

On April 22, 2025, a delegation of Libyan scientists met with the staff of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. From the Russian side, the meeting was attended by Alexei Mikhailovich Vasiliev, Honorary President of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Dr. Sc. (Hist.), Professor. Natalia Alexandrovna Zherlitsyna, Head of the Centre for History and Cultural Anthropology, Head of the Centre for North African and African Horn Studies, PhD in Economic Sciences Alexander A. Tkachenko, and Head of the Centre for Sociological and Political Research, PhD in Political Science Sergey Valerianovich Kostelyanets.

The Libyan side was represented by Salem Ramadan, Chairman of the Board of Sheikh Al-Taher Al-Zawi Charitable Organization, Mahmoud Al-Ghetmi, Head of the Libyan Research Center, Khatab Al-Nazil, Head of the Center for International Humanitarian Law, Salah Al-Shaab, Vice President of the Sheikh Al-Taher Al-Zawi Research Center, Al-Zubair Ahmad Salem, Head of the Libyan Center for Quranic Studies.

The meeting discussed possible cooperation in various fields, including joint preparation of publications on the history of Libya, Russian-Libyan relations, the role of Western countries in the Arab Maghreb region, the history of the countries of the Arabian Peninsula, and others. Russian and Libyan researchers expressed a positive opinion regarding the preparation of a Protocol of Cooperation between the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Libyan Sheikh Al-Taher Al-Zawiya Research Center.
Libyan colleagues welcomed the possible participation of Natalia Alexandrovna Zherlitsyna and other representatives of the Institute in the forthcoming celebration in September of the anniversary of Libya's independence and the establishment of diplomatic relations with Russia, as well as in an international scientific conference on this topic. In addition, the Libyan side expressed interest in the translation of the book “History of Libya” (the only book on this subject in Russian) for translation into Arabic. The parties agreed to maintain contacts and expand cooperation.
