February 22, 2022. Report by Banshchikova A.A. within the scientific seminar "Culture and Society"

On February 22, 2022, at the scientific seminar of the Center for History and Cultural Anthropology, A.A. Banshchikova presented a report "Askari, Arabs, Africans: the population of Tanganyika through the eyes of German colonial photographers and illustrators".

The report examined the frequency of images of these groups of the population of German East Africa in the colonial author's photography, book illustrations, and postcards, issued to familiarize the inhabitants of the metropolis with the conquered territories. It has been shown that askaris are very often depicted on postcards since the motive of the military presence is very important for colonial propaganda. On the contrary, in the author's photography and book illustrations, they are rarely presented, only in those works where it is appropriate.
