SCIENTIFIC COUNCIL FOR THE PROBLEMS OF ECONOMIC The Scientific Council for the Problems of Africa was founded in 1966 within the network of the Academy of Sciences. Presently the Council functions under the Social Sciences Division of the RAS. The RAS Institute for African Studies acts as the host organization of the SCPA. The Institute is charged with the responsibility to provide the SCPA with logistical, financial and organizational support in its activities. Chairman of the RAS Scientific Council for the Problems of Africa is the RAS Corresponding Member, Professor Alexei VASILIEV.

Assistant to the SCPA Executive Secretary - Nina KLEVKOVA The SCPA is comprised of 70 members from the academic Institutions of Russia, professors and lecturers of higher education Institutions and employees of a number of practical organizations. Among them there are four corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 67 Doctors and Candidates of sciences (D's and PhD's). The major task of the SCPA is the coordination of African studies carried out in the RAS institutions and in Russia's higher educational establishments in all main research fields, such as history, economics, international relations, Russian-African relations, political sciences, sociology, ethnology, philosophy, law and the problems of building-up of the state, geography, philology and the study of literature. The Council maintains professional contacts with the research centres of Ukraine, Byelorussia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. An important deal of the SCPA's activities is participation in preparing Russian and international conferences. Once in three years the SCPA jointly with the Institute for African Studies hold the Conference of Russian Africanists with broad participation of foreign scholars on African problems. The theses and papers delivered at the conferences are published in Russian and English. Jointly with the RAS Institute for African Studies, St Petersburg State University, the RAS Centre tor Civilisational and Regional Studies and the RAS Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology (Kunstkamera) the SCPA held in St Petersburg the conference titled Africa: Societies, Cultures, and Languages in commemoration of a prominent Russian professional Africanist L.A. Olderogge. The collections of the conference materials are being published in D.A. Olderogge Memorial Readings series. Jointly with the RAS Institute for African Studies, Institute of Asian and African Studies at Moscow State University, St Petersburg and Saratov State Universities the SCPA was an organizer of an all-Russia Conference School for New Africanists. The collected papers of the conference are now in print. Scholarly accounts of the conferences on the African problems, held by the SCPA, are regularly published in the journal Vostok/Oriens.
