POLITICAL PARTIES IN AFRICA - Conference Series Internal Changes and Foreign Policy of African Countries

May, 5-6 2022 – Porto

Organization: CEAUP, Institute for African Studies - Moscow , U. Pretoria

CALL FOR PAPERS
PANELS ACCEPTED FOR THE CONFERENCE

The Organising Committee of the Conference Political Parties in Africa, due for next October 22- 23 in Porto, is sorry to inform you that for the second time, due to the late development of COVID- 19 in Portugal and in the rest of the world, this Conference will be postponed.

The new dates are now 2022, May.5-6.

The paper proposals validated by the Scientific Committee will automatically be included in the 2022 Conference, if their respective proponents confirm their participation to the Organising Committee.

During colonial times, the political party (as well as the Trade Union) has been one of the most successful acculturated institutions enforcing social change in Africa. Within the independent States - especially after 1990 with the rise of multiparty systems – the inflation of African political parties and systems still shows no signs of regulation. Just like African demography, it seems that African political systems remain a hard field to pattern settings.

Regardless of their different sociology, ideological standings and organisational endurance, political organisations remain a key for the understanding of the trends of African states. In which ways have African political parties – legal or illegal - impacted their societies ? Is there an African way for the political party ?

More than one century after the rise of modern African political organisations, this Conference hopes to contribute for an interdisciplinary debate about their role and typologies. It also expects to cover, as widely as possible, the variety of African regional contexts.
