The Round Table "NEW TRENDS IN AFRICAN STUDIES: HISTORICAL, ANTHROPOLOGICAL, AND GENDER ASPECTS"
(Moscow, Russia, October 1, 2019)

First Announcement

Dear Colleagues,
On October 1, 2019, Center for History and Cultural Anthropology in cooperation with Center for Sociological and Political Sciences Studies will hold the Round table "New Trends in African Studies: Historical, Anthropological, and Gender Aspects". The event is devoted to the study of cultural, historical, and gender aspects of the development of African countries and peoples from the viewpoint of modern scientific knowledge. It involves an interdisciplinary approach and should bring together specialists in the field of history, anthropology, political science, sociology, gender, and cultural science. The round table is arranged to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Institute for African Studies and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Group of Gender Studies.

The Round Table is expected to consider such problems as the history and modern development of certain groups of African society, African diasporas outside the African continent (USA, India, New World countries), groups and practices of mutual assistance and self-organization in African countries, Russia / USSR relations with North African countries in 18th – 20th centuries, the sociopolitical development of Southern Africa, the development of mass media in Africa, Africa and globalization.

Gender studies are also relevant for the study of African civilization, which is characterized by the strict separation of all spheres of life into two worlds - male and female.

The presentations of participants in the gender panel suggest a wide range of topics and issues: the origins and features of the development of the science of gender; characteristics of socialization of adolescents in the context of the formation of gender identity; gender structure of relationships and behavioral stereotypes in the system of kinship and family-marriage relations; gender approach to the analysis of the system of traditional power relations and the structure of power in modern societies; particularities of gender order in Islamic societies; Russian women in Africa and their role in establishing intercultural and inter-civilizational ties.

The list of issues can be expanded.

The deadline for paper proposals (in the form of abstracts within 300 words in Russian or English; please also indicate name, place of work, position, academic degree and title, contact details) is September 23, 2019. The proposals should be sent to coordinators.
