Africa Days in Olsztyn
The organizers of Africa Days in Olsztyn invite you to
The Annual Scientific Symposium on “Africa - Central and Eastern Europe. Common experiences on geopolitical changes after 1989”
that will be held on
May 24-25, 2019

For several years, the scientific community at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn has been involved in very important research endeavors on the African continent. The Annual Scientific Symposium organized by the Institute of History and International Relations has become a platform for a wider debate on topics related to Africa and to the interdisciplinary scientific discourse held by Polish and foreign specialists on Africa. The Annual Scientific Symposium is an opportunity for Polish and foreign scholars to meet and have an interdisciplinary scientific exchange on various fields of research on Africa.

This year’s topic is “Africa - Central and Eastern Europe: Common experiences on geopolitical changes after 1989”.

Thirty years ago there were dramatic events that led to changes in the international relations system. The disintegration of the Soviet Union and the bloc of communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe resulted in a completely new geopolitical situation: the countries of the region found themselves in new conditions and determined the directions of development. These events were also important from the point of view of Africa. Russia, the successor of the USSR, has limited its activity on this continent to a minimum, and the United States has also lost interest in the region. New players, who saw a source of potential benefits in Africa, became active in the resulting geopolitical vacuum. African states, just like Central and Eastern Europe, had to redefine the priority directions of their policies.

This international Scientific Symposium dedicated to these issues will help assess to what extent the experiences of these two distant (geographically, politically, economically, socially, culturally) regions of the world were similar and how different.

The Conference will take place in Olsztyn on May 24-25, 2019

Conference languages: Polish, English, French, Russian.

Conference costs are borne by the delegating organizations or the participants themselves.
