IGAD and the Role of Regional Organizations in the Resolution of Armed Conflicts

The Centre for North African and African Horn Studies is pleased to announce the one-day roundtable "IGAD and the Role of Regional Organizations in the Resolution of Armed Conflicts". The event will be held on December 6, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow).
The roundtable will focus on the discussion of the dynamics and prospects of development of IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) as the leading organization in the African Horn on security and crisis management, examination of IGAD's diplomatic initiatives to resolve conflicts in the region, and drawing comparisons with the experience of other regional security organizations in the area of conflict resolution.

The list of the topics that we invite participants to address includes but is not limited to:

      - the main actors and factors the shape policies and agenda of IGAD;
      - the place of IGAD in national peace and security architecture of participating countries (Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan);
      - IGAD's contribution to the settlement of the armed conflict between Sudan and South Sudan;
      - IGAD's initiatives to de-escalate the internal conflict in South Sudan;
      - IGAD's mediation efforts to resolve the political crisis in Somalia;
      - the prospect of establishing IGAD's own regional peacekeeping forces;
      - the experience of other African regional organizations in the field of conflict resolution.

The invitation to participate in the round table is extended to national and foreign researchers, representatives of state institutions and foreign diplomatic missions, graduate and undergraduate students.
All applications by presenters should be submitted to the conference organizers at roundtable.igad.2016@gmail.com before November 15, 2016. The applications should include the title of the proposed oral paper. Discussants may register for the roundtable at any time prior to its start.
The main outcome of the event will be a monograph containing papers reflecting the discussions and work at the roundtable.
