Conference Hall of the Institute for African Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences

Center for Studies of Russian-African relations and Foreign Policy of African countries (Institute for African Studies RAS) on June 9, 2015 holds a round table "African migration: problems of influence on international relations".
Diaspora is one of the most vivid and important manifestations and one of the driving forces of globalization processes in the economy and politics.1980s-2000s accounted for the second largest migration "wave" that affected almost 1 billion people: internal migration was around 740 million people, cross-border (international) migration involved 215-230 million.
The African international migration, according to the World Bank estimates, amounts to 30.6 million, and taking into account illegal immigration, - to 40 million. African countries account for over 52% of the total number of African migrants, European countries - for about 30%.
Before the end of the Cold War, the migration issue has not attracted any special attention of researchers. However, over the past three decades, the situation has changed. Diasporas became influential players in international relations. They have an impact on the dynamics of the international security issues, on the reaction to the new challenges and threats, the bilateral relations between the countries of origin and their host countries.
The purpose of the round table: to identify the extent of African diasporas' influence and the mechanisms of projecting that influence on the system of international relations, internal and external policies of their countries of origin and the host countries in the context of the formation of a polycentric world order.

We invite you to take part in the discussion of the following problems:

- The potential of African migrants: quantity; age, educational and professional structure; the relationship with the political and business community in the host countries and countries of origin; the organizational structures of Diasporas. - The impact of African migration upon the problems of international security: conflicts, terrorism, radicalization of the migrant communities;
- Global governance and the Diasporas;
- Migration and the clash of identities;
- African Diasporas in Europe and Asia;
- African Diasporas in Russia: problems and prospects.
