Meeting with representatives of the embassies of African countries in Russia on the preparation of the Scientific Forum "Russia-Africa"

On December 8, 2022, based on the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a meeting was held with representatives of the embassies of African states accredited in Moscow to prepare the Scientific Forum "Russia-Africa: Dialogue in Scientific Research", organized by the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Center for Scientific Information (RCSI). The moderator was the director of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Irina Abramova.

During the event, the embassies were informed about the main results of the international scientific forum "Russia-Africa: science - education - cooperation", which took place on the sidelines of the first Russia-Africa Summit in 2019, and about plans to hold a similar event on the sidelines of the second Summit in 2023 and advanced scientific projects and programs implemented by the Russian Federation in African countries were also presented. Employees of the diplomatic missions of African states showed high interest - 30 representatives from 14 countries took part in the Meeting.

Director of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Irina Abramova and Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia Natalia Bocharova made introductory reports. The speakers outlined the importance of science and education for the development of Russian-African cooperation at the current stage.

During the event, Vladimir Kvardakov, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the RCSI, noted the deep understanding in the Russian scientific community of the need to establish closer cooperation between scientific organizations in Russia and African countries. The Head of the International Relations Department of the RCSI Alexander Usoltsev and his Deputy Maria Baktysheva focused on the research projects of RCSI cooperated with Egypt and South Africa as well as named the results of the forum “Russia-Africa: Dialogue in the Scientific Research” that took place on the sidelines of the First Russia-Africa Summit. Dmitry Kirizliev, the representative of the Secretariat of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, emphasized the importance of achieving concrete results in the development of Russian-African scientific cooperation.

The participants of the meeting were addressed by specialized speakers from Russian higher educational and scientific institutions, in particular, representatives from the Department of International Cooperation of the Russian Academy of Sciences, from the rectors of Moscow State University named after Mikhail Lomonosov, Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Russian State Agrarian University of the Moscow Agricultural Academy named after Konstantin Timiryazev, Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI", as well as representatives of the directorates of the Institute of Asian and African Countries of Moscow State University, the Institute of International Studies (IIS) of MGIMO, the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Ambassador of Angola, Mr. Augustu da Silva Cunha, the Ambassador of Nigeria, Mr. Abdullahi Yibaikwala Shehu, and the Ambassador of South Africa, Mr. Mzuvukile Jeff Maketuka, also made proposals on the agenda of the Scientific Forum.

Summing up the results of the event, Irina Abramova formulated opportunities for expanding the interaction between the scientific communities of Russia and African countries, and also outlined the difficulties that hinder the more intensive development of Russian-African cooperation both in science and in other most promising areas.
